PSYCH 1X03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Reinforcement, Classical Conditioning, Table Tennis
Document Summary
The learning of contingency between a behaviour and its consequence. Early researcher - thorndike, studied cats in a puzzle box, this put the emphasis on overt behaviour not conscious experience. Thorndike hypothesized cats would accidentally find the solution during one trial and then would be able to immediately escape during following trails. Instead he found the frequency of the random behaviour gradually decreased over time. The cats never had the aha moments humans have. Gradually the random behaviour displayed by the cats was stamped out. Law of effect- behaviours with positive consequences are stamped in and occur more frequently. Those with negative effects are stamped out and occur less frequently. Reinforcer- after this is presented it changes the rate of a certain response. Reward training- positive reinforcer to encourage a behavior ex. Giving a dog a treat everytime it sits.
