Memory metaphors misleadingly simplify memory as perfectly stored and easily retrieved. Data: stored data is identical to original form, retrieved data is identical to inputted version. Stored memory- includes personal details and interpretations, retrieved memory may be altered or lost. One memory can act as a cue to signal another memory into consciousness. Early work on memory noted how each memory cur is linked to the cue before it. Ebbinghaus- memory is a serial learning task , memorized lists of nonsense words. Encoding phase- participant learns a list of words or phrases. Retrieval phase- tested on how well they remember the words. Recall test- freely generate as many teams as she can remember. Recognition test- participants decided if a word presented is new or old. In both of these phases , participants who were told to learn the words and were not distracted do better. Our ability to recall recently encoded information rapidly decreases over time forgetting curve .
