As ebbinghas memorized nonsense word lists, he suggested that each word in the list served as a cue that triggered the memory of the word that followed: curing is an importance concept in encoding specificity, by which encoding and retrieval are linked through cues, testing our hypotheses, psychologists rely on cognitive models to understand a complex and abstract process like memory. In the retrieval phase, subjects are tested for their memory of the items presented during the encoding phase: recall, during a recall test, a subject is asked to freely generate as many items as she can remember, recognition, during a recognition test, a subject is shown several items and asked to judge whether each item is new , meaning it was previously presented, subjects who were explicitly asked to learn the list of items, performed better than subjects who were distracted, hermann ebbinghaus, used a basic encoding and retrieval design to learn about cueing and forgetting of memories.
