Above average effect causes you to identify dispositional causes for your successes, but situational causes for your failures, giving you an exaggerated view of your abilities. For positive events, actors will select dispositional explanations whereas observers will select situational explanations. Another heuristic that is used in making attributions is the availability heuristic. There are four factors: proximity you are more likely to be attracted to or to become friends with those you love or work closely with. A high proximity and a low functional distance exists when you encounter a person daily in classes but do not communicate with them. Interestingly, you also tend to like those that you anticipate interaction with: familiarity the mere exposure effect.
