The foundation for classical conditioning was done by ivan pavlov (pavlovian conditioning) Classical conditioning is the learning of a contingency btwn a signal and a later event that are paired (ringing a bell means santa just dropped off the presents) - focused on involuntary actions. [sound of metronome paired with putting the food in the dogs mouth: conditioned response (cr) the response from the cs once it the contingency has been formed btwn us and cs. Acquisition (negatively accelerated increasing function) of a contingency typically requires many trials, but can occur quickly in certain situations. Extinction is the dying out of the cr by breaking the association btwn the cs and ucs. [ringing the bell and not giving the dog any food over repetitive action, the dog will unlearn the contingency] this does not mean that the contingency is unlearned!
