PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Sound, Temporal Lobe, Oval Window
Document Summary
The auditory system translates sound waves into audition. Auditory system can translate sound waves from vibrating objects into psychological experience of audition. Trees make sound waves, but auditory systems makes audition. Sound waves do not make sound unless auditory system is present to translate waves into audition. Unit 2: the auditory mechanisms of different species. Species vary in the range of frequencies they can detect. Whales, dolphins, dogs have wider hearing range. Auditory system structures determine the range of frequency perception. Partly determined by structure of auditory system. Basilar membrane: contains hearing receptors, sounds of diff frequencies are processed along different areas of basilar membrane. The basilar membrane varies in length across species. Longer = processing of wider range of frequencies. Sound waves are vibration in the air particles. Air molecules surround source of sound moves chain of reaction of moving air particles. Condensed bands of air particles ripple away from the sound source.
