PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Gestalt Psychology
Document Summary
The dress was actually black and blue, but many saw white and gold. Two interpretations: a gold and white dress is a shadow, direct illumination on a black and blue dress. Our brain is used to taking in the light and context of the object. It was just a mountain, but at the angle from a distance, the monument looked like a human face. Humans are experts at shape recognition, following gestalt principles. We put so much meaning into completely random patterns. Big events are expected to have big causal explanations. Ex// when humans saw the face on mars, they thought there was a huge theory behind it. Ex// crop circles-it was just people messing around. Faces: a special form of pattern recognition. We attach a lot of meaning to faces. An innate preference for faces is influenced by experience. Something innate even in the absence of experience.
