Document Summary

The auditory system can translate sound waves from vibrating objects into he physiological experience of audition. Species vary in the range of frequencies they can detect. Humans can perceive sounds that are between 20-20, 000 hz respectable auditory range. Wales, dolphins and dogs have a sider hearing range. Frogs and birds have a much narrower range of frequencies that they can detect. At lower frequency detection extreme are fish. Highest frequency detection extreme are bats, rodents. Auditory system structures determine the range of frequency perception. Audible frequency range is determined in part by the evolution of the structures of the auditory system. Basilar membrane: key structure: contains the hearing receptors, sounds of different frequencies are processed along different areas of the basilar membrane. The basilar membrane varies in length, across specifies: shortest in amphibians and reptiles, longer in birds, longest in mammals.
