Self understanding: understanding of who and what we are. If you have sense of self, you would be able to recognize yourself in the mirror and you are your entity and your appearance re ects you and does not change into something else. Placed pre-verbal infants in front of mirror to see if they can recognize if its them. Originally used in non-human consciousness research put chimpanzee in front of mirror and see i they recognized if that was them, at. Rst they thought it was another chimpanzee, but after a couple of days they know it was them and not someone else conclusion that they do have some concept of self. Baby touches nose more= recognizes themselves in the mirror and how their self has been violated with dye. 18-20 months touch nose a lot, have some sort of self image. 21-24 months almost 100% of typically developed babies do it.
