Self: self is a slippery concept whose adequate de nition is irritatingly elusive. Self is our understanding of who and what we are. Self-understanding: the school you go to, your race, your religion; who you are at a cognitive understanding. Usually we ask people who are you, but infants are pre-verbal. Do infants have the ability to answer in any way. Researchers agreed that infants don"t have any complex idea of who they are. 2 years half of all kids can recognize themselves. Now used in human self-recognition research; get the mum to put some rouge on the child"s nose during play. Younger (17 months) - doesn"t recognize the mark on the forehead or the child in the mirror. Older (19 months) - get"s bothered by the mark and searches to nd where it came from. 9 - 12 months will not react to the rouge on the nose. 15 -17 months are unlikely to do anything.
