PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Somatic Symptom Disorder, ObsessiveβCompulsive Disorder, Mental Disorder
Document Summary
Criteria of abnormality or psychopathology: what are the things you look for when deciding whether an individual is disordered or whether their behavior is a product of a disordered mind. The impairment criterion: we can classify a person as having a mental illness if they exhibit disability or impairment in an important domain of interpersonal functioning such as school, workplace or interpersonal relationship. In fact, the criterion of impairment is one of the most defining criteria in the dsm- 5 as it was in the dsm-iv. We also have to consider the behaviors that only have the potential to lead to disability or impairment. The personal distress criterion: we describe this as a mental disorder any symptom or set of symptoms that cause an individual to be distressed or concerned about their behavior, thoughts or emotions. We also have to consider people that are extremely deranged and so. Really, it is up to psychologists and psychiatrist to decide what.
