PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Proofreading, Master Sergeant, Zoom Lens
Document Summary
Once the form has been organized by your perceptual system (e. g. what parts belong together, what is figure and what is ground), we then need to identify the object. Object recognition =/= object perception: contextual effects and constraint satisfaction, ambiguous at the feature and letter levels; disambiguous at the word level. There is much more here than perception. How do we go from object perception to recognition: there needs to be contact between the emerging percept and memory. What happens when the pattern recognition system is damaged: object agnosia: Associative agnosia - identification, meaning: prosopagnosia or face blindness unable to recognize identity of faces. In many cases can tell it is a face (including gender, age, etc) but cannot tell you who face belongs to not even family members. What happens when the pattern recognition is damaged: object agnosia or visual agnosia unable to recognize objects. E. g. the man who mistook his wife for a hat.
