Compare responses of adults with responses of na ve children to the following problem: need to paint the frame around the circular window with gold paint, which is expensive. Need to know area inside the lines, but outside the window. Mary"s father has 5 daughters: lala, lele, lili, lolo. Stuck or rigid in one way of thinking about an object, and what its function is. Initial state: box of tacks, book matches, candle. Task: fix the lighted candle to the wall. People don"t think of removing the tacks from the box and putting the lighted candle into the box. Instead, they try to use the tacks to directly attach the candle to the wall. Most problem spaces are huge, larger than we realize. We don"t realize how huge problem spaces are because of the heuristics and problem solving sets we use. There are costs and benefits to problem solving sets. Einstellung: general term for rigidity in problem solving.
