Franz joseph gall studied friends skulls and found bumps and depressions and correlated it with personality traits. Not very scientific - no experiments were conducted. Phineas gage - construction crew working with a crow bar that was blasted under cheek bone. Physical recovery was complete in a couple of months. No physical disabilities but profound changes in personality = evidence against localization. Doctor said gage had a loss of function because personality was completely changed (clams ignored because personality was still an early field) Localization: the brain is fundtionally subdivided into areas, regions, or modules that are specialized for certain types of function. Parallelism: presence of multiple pathways within a given sensory system that transmit and process different features of a complex stimulus relatively independently. Info is coming in at lower levels and then processed at higher levels. Injury to one pathway does not mean that you are going to lose complete function.
