Document Summary

This outline summarizes major points covered in lecture. It is not intended to replace your own lecture notes. Environmental sounds rarely occur in isolation from other sounds. Auditory masking occurs when multiple competing signals interfere with perception of signal of interest. Masking studies show how sound interactions influence our ability to detect a signal of interest (probe) in the presence of an interfering signal (masker). Influence of masker is measured experimentally as a change in probe threshold in presence of masker, compared to probe threshold in absence of masker. Alternatively, one can also characterize the amount of masking as the level of masker required to just mask detection of probe signal, compared to probe threshold in absence of masker. Can use tones or noise as probe and masker signals. The integration of sounds can occur over multiple stimulus dimensions, including time. One result of temporal integration is auditory masking.
