The math: men are having short term matings, so women must be too. Cross-cultural evidence that women engage in extra-pair copulations (with a long-term mate, but having sex with someone outside the mateship) A lot of people have cheated both men and women. Costs of short term mating might be more severe for women than for men. Women contract stis at a higher per sexual contact frequency than men. Desirability as a long-term mate can decrease. Risk of abuse by a long-term mate and/or a short-term mate and/or family. Long-term mate may engage in domestic violence if found cheating. Short term mate is more likely to be abusive than a long-term mate. Many theories, but there is not much research. Resource accrual hypothesis: women want more resources (may have insufficient resources for offspring on their own or with their mate)
