Different methods different interpretations (longitudinal vs. cross sectional) Practical applications of work in cognitive aging: hiring and promotion. Forced retirement and cognitive decline, treatment in workplace. Cognitive decline starts in (cid:884)(cid:882)"s need to intervene now. Cross-sectional (salthouse: see major cognitive decline from 25 years onward, verbal and numeric abilities relatively preserved. Longitudinal: perceptual speed decreases linearly with age (owever, we see preservation of other abilities until the (cid:888)(cid:882)"s, where we then see drop-offs. When does age-related cognitive decline begin (salthouse 2009) Cross-sectional research shows early, steep, linear decline. Explaining away cohort effects says they are not such a big deal. See some preservation of abilities in older age because of practice effects. Schaie (cid:523)(cid:884)(cid:882)(cid:882)9(cid:524) salthouse again reifies the (cid:498)cross sectional fallacy(cid:499) Age changes and age differences are different things. Schaie is pissed off: acting as though they are the same. Test-retest data are inadequate: error in testing.
