Psych 3cc3: chapter 3- the psychology of police investigations (58-78) Police interrogations: confession evidence is often viewed as a prosecutors (cid:498)most powerful weapon(cid:499) and police officers will often go to great lengths to secure such evidence. In some countries people may be convicted solely on the basis of their confession, although in north america, a confession usually has to be backed by some other form of evidence. In the past, physically coercive tactics were often used to extract confessions. In the mid-twentieth century, whipping was occasionally used (i. e. brown: mississippi) The mr. big technique: the mr. big technique is a noncustodial procedure that happens outside of the interrogation room. 95% conviction rate: but it raises some interesting ethical and legal questions. The reid model of interrogation: england and waled use techniques that are far less coercive that those used in north america.
