Psych 3f03 - lecture 27 guest lecture: diagnostic issues in darwinian medicine. Accurate diagnosis will have implications for treatment. He"s telling us it isn"t just him, there"s a lot of people supporting these views. Diagnosis we use to label various health traits (depression, anxiety) don"t accurately reflect true psychopathology. Underlying part says we will say something is a disorder if it causes discomfort, impairment, distress. Whatever its original cause must currently be considered a manifestation of a behavioural, psychological or biological dysfunction in the individual. Proposed 3 possible meanings of the word function . It"s the function part of the word that"s hard to understand: 1) any beneficial effect of trait/object, 2) the purpose for which it was created. No natural process that creates things with a purpose beforehand: 3) an effect that explains the structure and operation of a trait/object.
