What is development: death creates an available niche, development begins when the genome is complete, development happens in all species because all individuals die, creating a niche for new. Gamete - one of two sex cells, egg or sperm, that fuse together during fertilization. Adaptation - a trait that is designed and preserved by the process of natural selection because that trait conferred a reproductive advantage in the environment in which it evolved. Why study development of children: provides insight into our universal human nature, may inform educational or parenting practices. Plato: the classic nativist, children did not need to learn; only recollect, would recognize a new animal. Nativist - one who views development as being driven primarily or exclusively by internal forces. The information needed for development is assumed to exist within the developing child.
