RELIGST 2C03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Meta-Analysis, Sildenafil
Document Summary
High quality knowledge: safety, efficacy, systematic, generalizable, substantiated. The therapeutic misconception: informed consent autonomy. Conflict between aims of: research generalizable knowledge, clinical care improve patient well being. Example (in textbook) in late stage colon cancer there is a 5% survival rate over 5 years and there is safety testing of chemo agent. The therapeutic misconception here is that when a subject believes that every aspect of the research project is designed to benefit directly, there becomes a conflict between the abstract and the personal. There is a difference between misconception and misestimation. Distinguishing between the two helps correct this. Occurs at all stages of evidence based clinical research (production, methods of analysis, application of guidelines produced) Previously unconsidered but widespread and significant bias. Systematic reviews and guidelines reflect the biases of earlier studies. Biological essentialism = assumption that the only significant difference between men and women is biological reproductive capacities. Susceptibility need to analyze data in term of gender.
