Examines functions of educational institutions (selection and socialization) One important functions of schools is that they serve the function of selection- sorting students into different directions on basis of ability. This selection and sorting is done to make sure the most capable students go on to post secondary and the less capable don"t. Sorting and selection is done on basis of merit- hardest working and smartest students make it. Contest mobility and sponsored mobility: contest: open to everybody (in different countries there are standardized tests to see who makes it to highschool and who goes somewhere else after middle school) Highschool isn"t as focused on anymore- university is what matters about jobs in the future: sponsored: Assert that schools reward the best students regardless of their background- a lot of people disagree with this. Schools maintain this inequality in society as well.
