Document Summary
There are trends in membership of various religious denominations. Since the 1970"s, we"ve seen a decline in the number of parents w/ school-age children that regularly attend religious ceremonies. Growth of non-christian faiths increased due to immigration, which has led to diversity. Mega-churches can fit thousands and are described as religious superstores, offering amenities to keep followers. At a macro-level, religion has had a role in social movements. Religion is functional, useful, meets our social and spiritual needs, can provide supports, and can create moral boundaries and social solidarity. Churches serve the function of caring for people. Durkheim: the gods that people created are for social use, religious practice is done in a groups, god is the groups experiencing themselves. Science doesn"t have all the answers people need, religion serves this and can provide answers not given from science.
