Many books claim that the school system is declining and failing our children. Until recently, higher education was hought useless: most people didn"t complete high school. Most canadians feel teaxhers are effective in public schools. Ways that schools can connect to society: 1. Selection: channeling students into different types of schools and programs, creating stratification when programs are designated as higher or lower level and link to beter or worse job opportunities- badges of ability through grading. Who is selected for what and why. Conflict theoriest state that schools pattern economic inequality: schools are stratified in ways that reflect workplace hierarchies with bsic forms of schooling teaching students to be punctual, copliant and internalize orders. Structural functinlist state school selection is meritorious with the best, hardest working rewarded and trained for professional work: 2. Pass along values and knowledge to a generation.
