Health, illness, aging, and dying are socially constructed and structured by social categories (i. e. , class, gender, race, immigrant status, etc. ) Posiive relaionship between socioeconomic status (ses) and health o o. People of higher socioeconomic status generally have beter health. Hierarchy stress perspecive: if you compare your situaion to other people and perceive them to doing beter than you --> leads to stress --> negaively efects your health. Death and dying process have also changed - in terms of how they die, where they die o. Today, because fewer people die at home, death has become more invisible and private and scarier for some of us - have no connecion to it. Importance of social support, social sigma, social and public policy. Sigma impacts treatment and social policy o o o. Importance of social support - can improve physical and emoional health. Important contribuion to disease: how social sigma may impact the person.
