Lecture 2 chapter 1: understanding the sociological imagination. Sociology is the systematic study of human groups and their interactions. In other words, sociology looks at how external realities/society impact human behaviour. Sociological perspective refers to the unique way in which sociologists see our world and can dissect the dynamic relationships between individuals and the larger social network in which we all live. Macrosociology refers to attempting to understand society as a whole. Example of macro sociological concepts: race, class, sex, institutions and so on. Example of macro sociological theorists: marx, durkheim, and weber - looked at external reality) Microsociology refers to attempting to understand individual or small group dynamics. Example of micro sociological theorists: mead, cooley and blumer - looked more at individual human interaction. These are different approaches but they are largely interconnected! **further notes on these theorists can be found in the e book in chapter 1 module 1. 4 ** A phrase coined by c wright mills.
