Social stratification - societies hierarchical ranking of people into social classes. Social class - a group who share similar relationship to labour and the means of production and who are aware of their conflict with other classes. Based on both birth (ascribed status) and achievements (achieved status) Social status - position within the class structure. Redistribution of resources and social rewards (e. g. , closed vs open systems) Present in all societies, yet diversity in form and interpretation. Very little to no room for social mobility. Caste system determine what people can wear, what jobs they can preform and who they can marry. Result of ones own merit within the class structure (e. g. , meritocracy) Social mobility that occurs within a single general. E. g. , comparing the jobs a single person has had over their lifetime. E. g. , comparing occupations of parents and their children. Social inequality exists when certain attributes (gender, race, sexuality, ablebodiness) affect a persons access to socially valued resources.
