SOCIOL 2BB3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Social Disorganization Theory, Edwin Sutherland, Differential Association
Document Summary
Social disorganization theory: bare bone version: place matters. Edwin sutherland: we know there are certain towns or communities that have higher levels of deviance than other parts, rejected that we are born with deviance in our gene. From social disorganization to differential association: deviant behaviour is learned behaviour. Sutherland"s nine propositions: criminal behaviour is learned, criminal behaviour is learned in interaction with other persons in a process of communication. Learned to achieve them in deviant ways rather than non-deviant. Differential association theory: bare bones version, deviant associations --> deviant attitudes --> deviant behaviour, positive associations --> positive attitudes --> positive behaviour. Variations on a theme: daniel glaser, deviant associations --> identification --> deviant attitudes --> deviant behaviours. Identification: if they engage in deviant behaviours it"s only important if they identify themselves with those deviant individuals: who you identify with is ultimately who you are and what your behaviours are.
