Latently functional - hidden function that makes it a useful thing. This is when it becomes threatening to the family. Current example: denfield and gordon on the swinging subculture. Swinging (aka "mate-swapping", "faithful adultery": past time/hobby, individuals who were in a committed relationship where as a couple they choose to participate in sexual activity where they switch partners for sex, highly norm-governed, must participate as couples. Singles are not welcomed: no exchange of contact info/meeting, communicate for arrangements, not meeting outside of organized events, regular drug/alcohol intake. Functions of the swinging subculture: positive function for the families, bonding activity for couples, strengthens their emotional bonds, a thing they do together, and satisfy their needs of a new sexual partner, swinging together, clings together. These patterns of suicide had everything to do with how much integration and regulation. Social integration: an individuals sense of connection to the society they are a part of. Durkheim"s main contributions: social structure --> individual behaviour.
