With symbolic interactionism: our interpretive actions (how we make sense of things) is something we can"t ignore. Beach ball, and then determine what to do with it. Symbolic interactionism premises: human beings respond to things (objects, people, situations) on the basis of the meaning they give them, not: stimulus to response. Stimulus brings a response / prompts behaviour from an individual. Symbolic interaction rejected this, because we"re not like animals who all have the same response. We don"t want others to look down upon us after doing one bad thing: looking glass self . We look back at ourselves, and define ourself using words ex. Conflict theory says no, society isn"t homogeneous, it"s heterogeneous. Reactor/ label that people apply to our behaviour. For labeling theorist, deviance isn"t about people"s actions, but other"s reactions (the meaning applied to the action and how the audience makes sense of it) to.
