Originated in the work of emile durkheim. Deviance is universal; therefore deviance is necessary. Life would be much easier if we could do whatever we want to do but as a group, we are trying to create something called society. Every society has rules are defines what is deviant. Ie. those who confirm have a strong bond against those who don"t. When you have individuals who get in trouble for it, that raises a message to everyone else that no one should do it. We need to be motivated to confirm. People who don"t confirm makes those who do feel better about yourself about the fact that you"re not deviant. If a society doesn"t have a mechanism to change, that society is headed for trouble. Laws can be be found to be deviant by some people. Ie. fighting for women"s rights was considered deviant behaviour. Sitting in bar and approached by someone saying he needs someone killed.
