Parenting: think about your interactions with parents/parenting figures, what had the most impact on your development as a person, how would you parent similarly, how would you parent differently. Assumptions: motherhood as the natural default for women, family is heterosexual, complementary roles, motherhood as biological, not a social role. Feminism: overcoming patriarchy, revalorizing motherhood, social aspects, biological aspects. Parenthood/childhood: concept of parenthood, especially motherhood closely tied to prevailing concept of childhood , source of labour, little adults (1st job is to play, 2nd is to learn, vs. source of social value, priceless children. Cultural aspects: who is responsible for child"s development. Individual motherhood as a western focus: what is the value of the child, what is the cost of a child. Mother as institution: medicalization of pregnancy, childbirth: midwives shunned to the side/men exerted control over childbirth/reclaimed women"s role in pregnancy, reclaiming pregnancy, childbirth, new reproductive technologies, same sex parenting.
