Document Summary
Development of french sociology: the ideas of claude henri de saint-simon. Largely wanted to preserve society as it was (conservative reaction to the enlightenment) He saw the need for some changes to society. Wanted change however, saw room for some changes. Argued that social phenomenon need to be understood through empiricism and science :o: the ideas of auguste comte. He used the word social physics, and then switched to the term sociology. He was trying to suggest that social physics (sociology, a science of society), could and should be modeled on the natural sciences. In terms of studying society, he was interested in social statics (social structure, stable structures of society), and social dynamics (social change) He thought both were important, however he believed that social dynamics were more important: the law of three stages. He says there have been three intellectual stages: theological stage: existed historically prior to 1300.
