Suffered a stroke in 1916 died the next year at 59. An important concept for durkheim still important. Organizations: part-time or full-time, each job has a hierarchy. Family: division of labour between parents and siblings. Laid the foundation for sociology as rigorous social science that links theoretical ideas and empirical observations. External and collective ways in which society shapes, structures, and constrains our behaviour. Example: institutions such as the economy and politics they have constraining influence on social behaviour. Beliefs, practices, norms: all of which we learn in social context and have a constraining influence on what we do. These are also social facts, but social facts are much broader. These have constraining influences because they shape social policies and also shape individual decisions.
