LECTURE TWO
- There were many opportunities in America for people to work
- Alexander Webb first American convert to Islam in the 19th century, he was in India
Webb wore clothing inspired by the Ahmadis and Indian culture
- Haji Ali married a Mexican women and ended up living in Quartzite, Arizona
- The American Colonization Society aim was to send freed slaves back to Africa; a main figure in
this was Edward Blyden
- Eurocentrism an idea where Europe is considered the centre of the world, their morals and
values are held higher than those in other countries, ‘role models’
- PanAfrican movement bring Africans together all over the world, was intiated by Edward
Blyden, the real motive was to Christianize Africans
- Blyden studied Arabic in Syria, he was surprised by the literacy levels of the Africans and the role
that Islam had in educating people
- Racism was blatant in America and he was surprised by the equality of races in Islam
- Islam had given Africans autonomy and respect

- Fatima Masselmany survivor from the Titanic, was headed from Lebanon towards Michigan
- There was a new kind of Islam amongst the black community, indigenous people (Blacks in
America turning towards Islam)
