SOCIOL 2Z03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Claremont Graduate University, Research, Nuremberg Code
Document Summary
Research ethics needs to be addressed in the initial stages of a study and should be kept in mind in every phase of a study. Ensure that the people being studied are not harmed by their participation. Risk assessment is a key feature of all research (question is posed, setting in which data collection happens, how people access info on study, etc. ) Constant balance between potential gain and risk of harm. Research design is always weighted in favour of research subjects. Principle of no harm (minimal risk = harm no greater than their everyday lives) Identity could become known by story, etc. But it was not always this way as we will see by examining the history of research ethics. History of research ethics: nuremberg code (1948) (claremont graduate university, 2013): Trial in december 9, 1946 against doctors for experiments and tests conducted in concentration camps during wwii. No consent during these experiments (twin studies, gas chambers, etc. )
