Week 13 medicalization & the sociology of diagnosis. # of life problems defined as medical has increased. A problem is defined in medical terms, described using medical language, treated with medical intervention. Medical problems need to be defined as one. Constraints: competing definitions, cost of medical care, limits of insurance coverage. 5 ideas that characterize the biomedical model: mind-body dualims: philosophical separation of body from mind. A way of studying human body as physical object that is separate from social and psychological parts of person. Biology rather than social determinants: physical reductionism: break something down into smaller parts in order to understand it. Reducing phenomenon down looking at all the parts in isolation in how they link to everything else. Disregards social/physiological/psychological dimensions of sickness: specific etiology: an assumption that every disease has a particular cause to it. Disease and symptoms of what cause these diseases become sole focus of attention rather than studying patient.
