1956: participant observation of doomsday cult in chicago. Given up everything to follow cult, when prophecy failed - faced with dissonance. Leader (keech) only person to communicate with the guardians . Guardians would save cult from global ood at 12am. Cult members engage in dissonance reduction strategies. I. e. need to be metal free, clock is fast. Chose add: our belief in guardians saved world from ood . Experimental design: participants told to do boring task inserting pegs into board. Was told it would be interesting but it was boring. Then asked to persuade another person that the task was interesting. Finally asked to rate how interesting the task was (dependent variable in experiment) Participants given rated task more interesting (evidence of more dissonance because had to resolve in some way) Had reason to justify why they lied. Can"t change past behaviours, but can change how we feel about things.
