A group is a social unit that consists of two or more persons and has the following attributes: membership, goals shared by members, shared norms. A group"s cohesion is the extent to which its members desire to remain in it, and resist leaving it: social cohesion stay in group because they like members. Homophily: tendency for individuals to associate with similar others: task cohesion heavily involved in a typical task. Ex. soccer team, they have to play together but don"t necessarily like each other. Group goal = an outcome viewed by group members as desirable and important to attain. The ringelmann rope pulling task (1913: as number of members increase, the average contribution each member decreases. Motivation loss that occurs when an individual"s contribution becomes less clear to the group. Diffusion of responsibility: as groups become larger, de-individuation more likely. Dispensability: contribution perceived as smaller, and more redundant.
