Observing cognitive processes in a tangible form is very difficult. Suggests that those traits and characteristics that aid survival will occur more frequently as carries of these characteristics reproduce. Difficulty in judging explanations against competing arguments. Main concerns: individuals in society; interaction of the individual in and w/ others, society and structure; relationship bw individuals and social structure; and meanings. Symbolic interaction focuses on symbolic communication, meaning-making and interaction. Group processes explores the way people interact in groups. Social structure and personality examines the relationship bw positions in the social structure and values, beliefs, and health. Combines the views of structural focus and argues that institutions and society shape our. There are three foundational premises of symbolic interactionism. Human beings act toward things on the basis of the meanings that things have for them. The meaning of things is derived from, or arises out of, the social interaction that one has w/ one"s fellows.
