Help sometimes - if necessary to alleviate own distress. Deservingness: based on assessment of need, which is subjective, can often involve assessing whether someone is a worthy victim or if they are responsible for their plight. Similarity: tend to help those we share similarities with, often based on shared membership in a group (in-group versus out-group), similar to sdv background, based on sharing similar primary emotions (ie. happy, sad, etc. ) See oneself as less fortunate: more likely to help when in a bad mood when: Want to feel better about oneself so help others as a form of mood adjustment. When we help, we receive gratitude, which can change our mood.
