More closely approximates rewards: external reinforcement vs. internal reinforcement, observational learning. Genie"s isolation = very little opportunity to observe basic behaviours, or more complex (e. g. dressing) Genie initially demonstrated aptitude for 3 components of language: sound system (phonology, words and associated meanings (lexicon, rules for combining words into meaningful utterances (grammar) Critical period hypothesis: brain plasticity: connection of neurons in brain (movement, reconnection, recreation) Not enough plasticity age 13+ to learn language. Innate ability to create language but without interaction its hard. Genie may have had learning disability: reason for being locked up by father, reason for inability to learn language.
