The social sciences developed in the 18th and 19th century. What is real: we can see, touch, feel, etc, although we may know something is there without being able to actually touch. How do we know what we know: personal experience, example learning that a hot metal spoon in the kitchen is hot and will burn you, second-hand knowledge, tradition. Values and practices passed down in society. What is and should be from the past. Some people may not want to perceive things the same way as you: authority. People of authority taking advantage of their power and advertising for profit.
