Document Summary

Stress results from transactions between people and their environment. During transactions, we encounter situations that may induce feelings of stress (stressors) Based on encounters, we make appraisals (judgements about how to respond to stressors) Stressor appraisal coping health outcome. Stress is an individual phenomena - no two people experience it in the same way, and therefore the stressor isn"t important, it"s the individual"s appraisal of the stressor. Coping: thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that people engage in when trying to reduce stress. Two types: problem-focused (regulating the stressor to minimize its distress) and emotion-focused (regulating emotions) Effective coping reduces the negative effects of your stress; ineffective coping doesn"t - it doesn"t address the stressor and can sometimes make the stress worse. People who experience lots of stress, especially those with poor coping responses, show higher rates of illness. Social readjustment rating scale: measures negative situations (ex. breakup) alongside positive events (ex. marriage)
