Module 2: The Evolution of Fatherhood and Motherhood
- Children are resourceful, intelligent and resilient, and we can contextualize them within our
families
- Conway provides two definitions of family:
1. Family is the coming together of a man and a woman, usually (but not always) married as
a symbol of their mutual love and commitment.
- Children are often produced
- Mother, father and children live together in the same home developing a long term
economic, social and emotional unit
- As the family expands, it includes aging grandparents
- This is a more traditional definition of family
- Analyzing this definition of family:
- The man adult partners are heterosexual, the definition states ‘a man and a woman’
- The definition states the partners are not always married, which makes common law
arrangements an acceptable union
- The intrinsic values in the partnership are love and relationship; not convenience.
- It is also noted that divorce or separation is a possibility and children are not required to
complete a family
- This definition states that children are often produced, which assumes that the man and
woman are able to conceive. This definition leaves out adoption and fostering as options
for children.
- The responsibilities within the family unit are clearly underlined: they are financial,
psychological and social well being
- It’s also added that extended family is an option, such as aging grandparents
2. Family is a relationship of some permanence amongst persons with or without children.
- Analyzing this definition:
- This is a more simplistic and inclusive definition
- “Relationships amongst persons” means that extended or joint families could be
considered
- This definition could include fostered and adopted children and situations such as Anne
of Green Gables (who was adopted by two unmarried siblings), gay partners with or
