Did not found a religion but was later esteemed by the greeks as one of their 7 sages because he began a tradition of critical inquiry in many subjects (geometry, astronomy, and cosmology) Most famous achievement was the prediction of a solar eclipse in 585 bce. Viewed water as the basic stuff of the cosmos. Said to have been a student of thales. Reduced the cosmos to one thing he called the indefinite; introduced the notion of a supersensible reality. The indefinite addressed a problem that thales did not recognize: how opposite natures could give rise to one another, how something wet for example could produce something dry. Declares that the earth stays at rest because of equality.
