Working with individuals and families: housing case study. Social workers use value, skills and knowledge to help the individual and support them to improve their life situation; consider the theories we talked about last week. Tonight we"ll focus on values and beliefs of social workers. Firstly, they believe in promoting social justice, and the right that people have to a good life. Social workers need to empower these individuals and discover their unique strengths. There are direct and indirect practice, today we"re focussing on direct practice. You have to be interested in others stories and be interested in what they have to say. Must have interviewing skills, and be able to control feelings and ask open ended questions. You need to understand each other and give the person information and resources for support. You must interpret what someone is saying to you as you may not always understand; you must be agreeable and strive to solve problems.
