Discrimination and oppression against individuals and groups based on their age. Robert butler (1960"s usa) talked about ageism as a systematic stereotyping of people purely because they are old". The tendency to put an older person"s age first and foremost, and the corresponding inability to see older persons as individuals with widely varying life experiences, characters, etc. Aging is often seen as loss and decline (looking younger through cosmetics, for example)
