Lecture 9: guest lecture megan ross sexual violence against women. Speaks to the pervasive culture about how we value women. Two women must speak to each other, not about a man. Addresses sexual violence against younger women 17-24. We need a consistent response to victims who have experienced violence. 7 basic responses for victims of violence svrp. mcmaster. ca. Sexual based violence- continuum: inappropriate touching to rape. Law & order: women = victim, male = perpetrators. In the media we often see perpetrators as : creepy, insane, racialized, someone powerful/macho. Survivors seem as : timid, venerable, dressed slutty. We think it is rare: 1 in 4 women assaulted in their lifetime, 1 in 7 men (95% from heterosexual women) Rapist are creepy men in alleyways & stranger danger : majority know their perpetrator and it mostly happens at home & school. Rape happens at night : most commonly happens from 3-6pm. Easier for us to believe that rapist are strangers to us.
