People lived on the continent of america for thousands of years prior to columbus arriving in 1492. There were many different people each with their own complex culture and ways of knowing the world. Through a combination of violence, negotiation of treaties, and betrayal of those treaties. All of this was done in the name of god, civilization but was really motivated by financial gain and trade interests.
